This event explored the role of pro bono in defending civil liberties, through a film screening of the Andrew Malkninson (2023) case documentary which provides a stark and moving account of a miscarriage of justice that saw Malkinson wrongly imprisoned for 17 years for a crime he did not commit.

The screening raised awareness about the systemic failings that led to his conviction and the crucial role pro bono lawyers, journalists, and campaigners played in uncovering the truth and securing his eventual release. The event highlighted how access to justice is often dependent on the persistence and dedication of those working outside of the formal legal system.

By shedding light on the gaps in legal aid and the limits of institutional support, the Malkinson case underscores why pro bono work is not just valuable but essential. For aspiring lawyers, it serves as a call to action: legal skills can and should be used to protect the rights of the most vulnerable.
